On the Other Way

       
        The main concept that my thesis will put emphasis on is time. Time is the strongest power in the world. It not only can destroy everything gradually but also can turn everything into its original face cruelly. However, on the other hand, it can take all sorrows away and cure any hurt in a heart tenderly. In addition, the individual accumulation of time is the life of a person. The horizontal summation of time is the whole life of human beings. The straight summation of time is the life of the human species. We develop civilization and breed offspring in life. On the one hand, our spirits experience every kind of emotion during life. On the other hand, our bodies also go through the steps of birth, growth, sickness, and death during life. This is an endless repeating circle and no one can be the exception. Among these processes there are countless subjects for me to create and get inspired. These are the exact things I want to spend all my time and energy to explore now. 


         As to my thesis works, they will be a series of creations with similar concepts. The forms will be a film, a video installation, and an interactive work. I’ll use the knowledge of physical computing, compositing, image / sound editing, and MAX / Jitter / MSP to create them. Now I have two processing works that I want to develop further next semester. One is a short film called “Fleeting” and the other is a video installation called “Flow”.  For “Fleeting”, it’ll take a lot of compositing and special effect technologies to finish. For “Flow”, it’ll use many physical computing and MAX / Jitter / MSP skills to make. They are pieces related to time.


        Besides, I also want to establish a new work that can change the way of reaction and presentation by gathering and accumulating data from the outside world. In other words, this piece can learn things and create new experiences on its own with the passing of time. For this work, I’ll spend my entire summer break to travel in Europe and visit important contemporary art museums such as ZKM and Future Museum. Also I’ll participate in important art festivals such as Documenta in German and Venice Biennale in Italy. I hope I can bring a bunch of ideas back to New York for creating.
